The McCreary County Board of Education met on Monday, November 21 at McCreary County Middle School to discuss and/or take action regarding several building construction matters.
First, in actions with discussion, the Board approved Change Order # 1 for the McCreary County Middle School Renovation Project.
Next, the Board approved the KDE Owner-Architect Agreement between McCreary County Board of Education and Deco Architects, Inc. for the McCreary County Vocational Education Center Renovation and Addition Project. The project is funded by a $4 million grant (LAVEC) with $400,000 matching from the local district. Additionally, the board approved the hiring of Branscum Construction as the construction manager for the project.
The Board also approved signing of BG-1 for Land acquisition by the District.
In other construction related matters, the Board approved a motion to further study construction of an athletic complex project. Athletic Director Kenny McKinney addressed the board noting projected cost is a barrier to large scale construction. He noted the main needs of district athletes are as follows: Lack of space (locker rooms, etc.) for middle school football, lack of practice space for middle school wrestling, lack of space for high school wrestling (girls do not have restrooms or locker rooms), inadequate space in weight room, lack of indoor space for baseball, softball, etc. for late winter/early spring practice, and need for turf field. With a turf field, all teams can use the field to practice and play games without destroying the field. Currently, the existing non-turf field can only be used for games.
Deco Architect presented a tentative design in which the existing athletic complex would be renovated to increase weight room space with a “matching” complex facility built in the adjacent area. The new complex would be two levels, equal in size for a total of 12,000 square feet. The new complex would accommodate wrestling, archery, turf sports, etc.
Estimated cost of the project is $5 million.
In an unrelated matter, the Board approved an agreement with Pine Knot Job Corps Conservation Center establishing a secondary program through the McCreary County School District at the Job Corps. The agreement currently provides one teacher. The program is seen as a win-win for all parties with the Job Corps gaining the secondary program and the District receiving funds for student attendance.
During the communication portion of the meeting, several student groups were recognized including McCreary County Middle School Highest I-Ready Score and Raider Pride award recipients and the McCreary Central High School FFA Team (National Convention Winners).
The next meeting of the McCreary County Board of Education will be on Monday, December 12, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. at McCreary Central High School.
