Thanks to Apolonio Cruz and Nelida Chavez, owners of Whitley City’s Santa Fe Mexcan Restaurant, McCreary Countians can now enjoy sweet visits to a locally owned ice cream shop.
Located next to the Santa Fe restaurant in the Oaks Plaza, Luca’s Ice Cream is the place to go for scoops of ice cream, banana splits, milkshakes, and other sweet treats.
The shop is named after two year old grandson, Luca Cruz.
“My grandson loves ice cream and so does my thirteen year old daughter, Litzy,” Nelida said with a smile. “He comes in here, and he just loves all the ice cream!”
The ice cream shop is attractively decorated in bright pink with lots of colorful murals and seating. It’s a place designed to make customers feel happy about coming inside to try one of the sixteen flavors of ice cream currently offered.
In addition to ice cream served up in choice of cone (waffle, cake, or regular), customers can choose from a wide array of ice cream treats including: a variety of specialty ice creams on sticks, milkshakes, manganodas (mango covered with chamoy and topped with chili powder), banana splits, churros with ice cream, and root beer floats. Of course, there are plenty of ice cream toppings, including nuts, marshmallows, and sprinkles, to make the sweet treats complete. For those who prefer sweet treats of another kind, cotton candy and cakes are available.
While the shop specializes in ice cream, hungry patrons can find snacks including chili dogs, nachos, and Cheetos with cheese.
Although the temperatures outside began dropping just as Luca’s Ice Cream Shop opened, Nelida says the shop has been busy.
After all, for those who love the frozen desert, it is never too cold to get happy over the sweet treat of ice cream!
