The Pine Knot Banking Company was founded October 6, 1906 by J. L. Harmon, J. W. Hutchison, John West, P. M. Stephens, and W. B. Creekmore. The bank was an impressive building and the first brick building in what later became McCreary County. The bank was in continuous operation from 1906 until February 1924. At that time the name was changed to the Bank of McCreary County and the banking operation was moved to a two-story frame building on Geary Street in Whitley City across from the courthouse.
The Pine Knot Banking Company building, located on the corner of Cal Hill Road and old Highway 27 (formerly the Old Jacksboro Road), became the office of Dr. C. D. Harmon who later rented the building as a residence. In later years the building was donated to the Pine Knot Christian Church by the heirs of Albert Hickman after it fell into disrepair and was eventually torn down.
