Blue garbage cans will help keep workers safe
Dots of blue are now prevalent alongside the roadways of McCreary County as Scott Solid Waste delivers dark blue, 95 gallon, wheeled carts to McCreary County customers who do not currently have one. Beginning on February 2, 2023, local weekly residential garbage service pick up will be for the blue Scott Solid Waste carts only. Scott Solid Waste made the move in an effort to become more efficient and provide safer working conditions for their drivers. Since their garbage trucks are now equipped to automatically lift and dump bags of garbage from the standardized blue carts directly into their trucks, drivers will no longer have to exit their trucks at each stop to manually dump garbage cans. With only one worker per truck to both drive and dump garbage, the automatic system is much safer and more efficient.
When placed out for pick up, carts need to sit on a flat surface no further than three feet from the curb. The wheels of the cart need to face the home. There should be five feet of space between the cart and other objects. Lids should not be tied down, and carts should not be tied to other objects. Customers need to set out trash carts by 5:00 a.m. or the prior night. (However, if bear or dogs are known to roam an area, it is not advisable to put trash out the night before collection.)
The new garbage cans are provided as a part of garbage service. If a single can will not hold all garbage, customers can request a second can for an extra $10 per month.
Despite Scott Solid Waste implementing a slight increase of $2.05 on the monthly base rate (current monthly base rate total is $17.50 +fuel surcharge) for garbage service throughout McCreary County, residents in the county still enjoy one of the cheapest garbage service rates in the area. Most in surrounding counties pay $20.00 or more per month.
Additionally, McCreary County senior citizens, ages 62 or older and eligible for Kentucky Homestead Exemption, are eligible for a significant discount by emailing a copy of their driver’s license and proof of Homestead Exemption (copy or clerk/PVA letter regarding Homestead Exemption) to OLP6041@wasteconnections.com at Scott Solid Waste. Name and street address for service must be included. The senior discount takes $10.85 off of the regular quarterly rate for service.
