It was just Larry Hammond’s second day of work as the McCreary County School District’s Interim Superintendent when he met for the first time with the McCreary County Board of Education during their regular board meeting on February 27. After being introduced by Board Chairperson Johnny Barnett, Interim Superintendent Hammond expressed optimism for the district, noting his role as a transitional person in the District.
With that in mind, the Board voted unanimously to post the vacancy (for superintendent) and begin the process of searching for a McCreary County School Superintendent (including forming the screening committee.) Board Member Estle Swain will represent the Board of Education on the superintendent screening committee.
In other business, Jonathan Smith with Branscum Construction gave an update on the McCreary County Middle School Renovation Project. An additional construction related agenda item called for action on approving the schematic design phase package for the McCreary Central High School LAVEC Project (Career Tech wing renovation and addition). The Board unanimously approved the schematic design package presented by DECO Architects.
In addition, the Board voted unanimously to donate $4,500 to the public library for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The program provides books free of charge to local children from birth to age five.

Finance Officer Tiffany Duvall noted the Tentative Staffing Allocation (SBDM only) for 2023-2024 is adequate for the current number of SBDM staff with the exception of one classified and one certified. The monthly financial report reflected the following: a General Fund balance of $6.2 million with a total balance of funds 1-7000 at $15.16 million. Highlights of the monthly finances include December SEEK payments of $1.3 million and a federal drawdown of $934,387.00. Food Service was reimbursed in the amount of $189,822.
The Board also unanimously approved all actions by consent including the following (proposed as motions last month by Board Chairperson Johnny Barnett):
-Recording Board Meetings and loading to the District’s YouTube account and posting a link to the District’s Facebook page.
-Reviewing new positions that need to be created with the cost and funding source explained one month prior to voting.
-Reviewing possible raises one month prior to voting with the reason for the raise and how much it will cost explained.
-Abolishing the District Instructional Supervisor Position.
The McCreary County Board of Education will meet again in regular session on the fourth Monday of March (March 27, 2023) at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Office.
