Board agrees to pay $160,000 for release from contract
The McCreary County Board of Education met in special session on Thursday (March 9, 2023) to accept Superintendent John Gunn’s letter of resignation, effective July 1, 2023. Gunn is currently on a paid leave of absence per an agreement and release document accepted by the Board on February 20, 2023. Gunn’s resignation letter declared his pending resignation as being in accordance with the release agreement approved in February by the McCreary County Board of Education. Any additional reasons for the resignation were not stated in the letter.
Also during Thursday’s meeting, the Board voted to declare a vacancy in the Office of Superintendent and unanimously agreed to contract (for $7,000) with the Kentucky Association of School Administrators (KASA) to provide training and guidance to the Board throughout the Superintendent Search Process.
Additionally, the Board entered Executive Session to discuss proposed or pending litigation against or on behalf of the public agency. No action was taken.
In other Board related matters, The Voice received a copy of the Agreement and Release document concerning Superintendent Gunn’s current leave of absence and pending resignation. The release agreement was approved by a 3-2 vote during a special called meeting on February 20, 2023. Board members Johnny Barnett, Estle Swain, and Cody Perry voted in favor of accepting the agreement while Board Members Stacey Hammons and Braxton King voted “nay.” Along with other items, the release agreement calls for the following: (1) Delivery of Gunn’s letter of resignation, with an effective date of July 1, 2023 (2) Agreement for Gunn to be on paid leave until June 30, 2023 (3) Agreement to pay Superintendent Gunn a total sum of $160,000, to be paid as his normal and regular part of payroll until June 30, 2023. The remaining amount is to be mailed to Gunn in the form of a check in the amount of $113,125.03 on July 15, 2023.
Reasons for Superintendent Gunn’s leave of absence and resignation are not stated in the Agreement and Release document.
Negotiations concerning details of the Agreement and Release document were in process for several days prior to acceptance of the agreement on February 20, 2023.
