McCreary County Sheriff David Sampson reported a quick recovery of the 2018 red, crew-cab truck stolen early last week from Longmire’s Auto Sales on Hwy 27 in Whitley City. In addition to the truck, law enforcement also rapidly located stolen keys and titles for all of the vehicles at Longmire’s dealership.
McCreary County law enforcement was notified early Monday morning (March 6, 2023) after an employee discovered a truck, keys, titles, and other miscellaneous items had been stolen during the prior night.
Sheriff Sampson began an immediate investigation, and law enforcement quickly learned the stolen vehicle could possibly be located in the Bear Wallow/New Liberty area of McCreary County. Sheriff Sampson and Chief Deputy Dustin Ridner spent the remainder of Monday and the following morning questioning residents in the community and surveying the area. At about noon on Tuesday, law enforcement received a tip, leading them to the stolen vehicle in a wooded area behind a nearby residence. The truck had minimal damage. In addition, all stolen keys from the Longmire dealership were found inside the truck, and all stolen titles were located in a box in the woods.
Later in the week, Sheriff Sampson and Deputy Ridner returned to the area and spotted a suspect standing by the open trunk of a car. The suspect fled on foot when he spotted law enforcement. The Sheriff’s Department was able to recover the remainder of the missing items from the trunk of the car, including a battery charger, heater, air compressor, and credit cards.
Chief Deputy Ridner said a suspect has been identified.
Sheriff Sampson will present the case to the grand jury later this month.
