In 1928, the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company completed construction on Store 1. This picture, taken in early spring of 1928, shows the store’s beautiful recessed entrance and large showcase windows. The Confectionary is pictured to the right of Store 1. Above the Confectionary, one can see the top of the Opera House that featured silent movies as well as theatrical performances in 1928. The top floor of Store 1 housed the McCreary County Record offices and the Stearns High School Gymnasium.
The McCreary County Heritage Foundation is working to bring Store 1 back to its former glory as it provides a new home for the McCreary County Museum. Relocating the museum to Store 1 will allow easier access for local residents and visitors who seek to learn more about our county’s remarkable history and citizens.
