Seeing their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.”
– Luke 5:20
I have always heard, and often used, the saying, “Show me your friends, and I will show you your future.” The people you surround yourself with will greatly affect the way you walk this life. If you surround yourself with people who constantly participate in negative actions, it is going to cause you to begin to make similar decisions. It may not be right off the bat, but it may be a week, a month, or a year down the road. So what is it worth? If it has the potential to lead you down a negative path, why follow it?
In this account Jesus is teaching to a packed house, literally. The friends of the paralytic take him to Jesus, and the only way to Jesus is through the roof, so they do it. The friends went to all lengths to make sure their friend was taken care of, and he couldn’t do anything to return the favor. Jesus will go on to forgive the man’s sins, and after being confronted by political leaders, He heals the man.
Without this friend group the man would have never made it Jesus, maybe would have never been healed, or forgiven. So we ask the question, who are you surrounding yourself with? Are your friends pointing you to Christ, or pulling you away?
