I thought I should drop a line to alert your readers to the impending problem on our southern border. I am speaking of Tennessee, not Texas. Roughly eight months ago, Tennessee Governor Bill lee signed into law a provision that would mandate that by 2026, starting teacher pay would be no less than $50,000 per year. This action would put Tennessee among the top 10 states for teacher compensation. Currently, Kentucky ranks 44th.
My concern is that once these pay raises are in place, teachers in southern Kentucky will be looking for jobs in Tennessee. Most schools in Kentucky are already suffering from a teacher shortage; this shortage will only increase unless our state General Assembly acts to remain competitive with our southern neighbor. I would humbly ask your readers to contact our legislators, Senate President Robert Stivers and Representative Ken Upchurch at 1-800-372-7181, and ask that they take immediate action.
