The Christian life is a two edged sword. It is not only being set free from WHO you used to be but it is being liberated into WHO He has made you to be.
Jesus. by the Cross, took care of our past life, and by His resurrection, He has empowered us to have a new life. The Bible paints a clear picture that all are under the penalty of sin. It clearly says all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. It also states that we all, like sheep, have gone astray. We have each sought our own way, and the Lord has laid the iniquity of us all on Him.
The gospel is rooted in the truth that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. The Bible says, “The Lord Jesus Christ is the one who gave Himself for our sins, so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God, and Father.” The truth of the gospel is that Jesus Christ became what we were that we might become what He is. This is clearly spelled out in the book of Corinthians, where it says, “He has made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Christ.” Jesus became sin so that we could be saved from sin, releasing us from the penalty of our past wrongdoings.
“Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things are passed away, behold, all things have become new.” What a great truth is revealed here. Not only am I released from my past, but now my heart has been so changed I’m empowered to live a new life in Christ. One is not just saved and then left to their own devices to try and see if they can make it.
We have a great promise from the Lord that He will never leave us or forsake us. So not only does the Gospel take care of my past, but it makes it possible for the Holy Spirit to live within me to empower me to live a future in Him.
Jesus died on the cross so that we may be declared righteous. He was raised from the dead to live in our hearts to empower us to live righteously. The gospel not only takes care of my past, but it gives me a wonderful future in Christ. It’s not just about going to heaven, but it’s having heaven in our hearts here on earth.
God has promised in His word, “I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a future.” So, as a believer, we have truly been set free from WHO we used to be and have now been liberated into WHO He wants us to be.
